More About Biofeedback

 How Does Biofeedback Work?

Biofeedback is a unique type of therapy because sensitive equipment rests on your skin and reads the state of  stress and relaxation of your body.  The signal is displayed on a computer monitor. The science behind the biofeedback signal is reliable and often speeds improvement to reduce unwanted symptoms. Yet the equipment is not enough, usually biofeedback is most effective when combined with counseling and stress management. Biofeedback is a safe, effective and non invasive procedure. Results of treatment may vary.

Enhancing Biofeedback with Counseling and Stress Management

Biofeedback therapists are trained to assess individuals to determine the nature of problems and then to provide treatment. Improvement is more likely to occur when the individual is treated as a whole, therefore, talk therapy will enhance the use of biofeedback equipment. The therapist will teach you 3 relaxation techniques and make you a personal relaxation CD to listen to at home. You will be requested to practice for 12 to 15 minutes 2 times a day, and keep a simple written record.  The goal is to be able to self-regulate, which means you can relax and change your physiology without the use of the biofeedback equipment. This skill can be used in both social and work settings.
